Where We Go When We Sleep

A small room in the basement, a tropical closet: dark, dank, the scent of decayed leaves left in the flower beds until late April; raking those leaves, cupping them in our hands and holding them wet to our faces, then shutting our eyes, tight; imagining some lush and luxurious place smelling of spring and estuary and sex; picturing the colors: forest, fern, grasshopper, avocado, pine, cicada, lime.
